Leaving for college doesn't mean leaving the farm.

Home and Hard Work

Home is where the heart and the hard work is, at least on our farm is. This weekend was no exception. Starting bright and early Saturday morning, we began one of my favorite farm jobs: working cattle. Starting the morning off right, as soon as Dad rattled the bucket of feed, the cows took off running for the lot. Cows running anywhere is never a good thing, but cows running before you work them is even worse.  With one cow getting a solid kick to my Dad’s leg, I was happy we were only working the calves. For this time, we only had to castrate the bull calves and give everyone their first round of vaccinations.

Some of our calves waiting to be worked.

All of supplies, ready to go!

A couple of weeks from now we will round everyone up again, give the second round, and wean off the youngsters. Everyone gets a special job when we work cattle (thanks for the pics Mom!) and usually, I get to give all the vaccinations. This time, I was designated ear tagger.

Working on my ear tagging skills.

Not sure if that was a promotion or not. Of course, working cows is never boring, but this time was almost a disaster. When we castrate our bull calves, someone has to get down in the shoot. (Probably not the safest way, but that’s how it happens!) One tricky little calf worked his head out of the head gate and slammed back into the shoot and the guy in there. Luckily, no one was hurt including the calf but it was a little scary!

After all the fun of working cattle, I thought I would get the rest of the day off. But no, Dad had different plans. So after working cattle, we got to build an electric fence, and then after lunch, we went straight into hauling manure. Thank goodness for our four-wheel drive Ford tractor or I wouldn’t have been able to move in the morning!

Even though, I may have to work my butt off when I go home, I still wouldn’t trade a day of it for anything else in the world. Home and hard work will always be in my heart.
